Obama Said the Us Will Continue to Pursue
Candidates love to use the words priority and top priority as a way of emphasizing the importance of the speech topic of the day. But looking back over the last couple of years, it may become difficult to know exactly how President Barack Obama will prioritize the work ahead.
I went back over speeches from the last year to see what Obama identified as top priorities. There are LOTS of them.
Afghanistan
On July 15, Obama spoke about emphasizing the fight against terrorism in Afghanistan, saying, "And that's why, as president, I will make the fight against al Qaeda and the Taliban the top priority that it should be." Source: The Washington Post

Top Five Priorities
Asked on CNN which would be his top priority among health care reform, energy independence, tax cuts for the middle class, education spending or immigration reform, Obama answered:
"Top priorities may not be any of those five. It may be continuing to stabilize the financial system. We don't know yet what's going to happen in January. And none of this can be accomplished if we continue to see a potential meltdown in the banking system or the financial system. So that's priority number one, making sure that the plumbing works in our capitalist system.
"Priority number two of the list have put forward I think has to be energy independence. We have to seize this moment because it is not just an energy independence issue, it is also a national security issue and it is a jobs issue. And we can create 5 million new green energy jobs with a serious program," Obama continued. "Priority number three would be health care reform. I think the time is right to do it. Priority number four is making sure that we have tax cuts for the middle class and part of a broader tax reform effort. Priority number five I think would be making sure that we have an education system that works for our children." Source: The Boston Globe
Protect Tax Dollars
Obama said: "From the moment I take office, my top priority will be to do everything I can to make sure that your tax dollars are protected. I will demand a full review of this financial rescue plan to make sure that it is working for you. If you — the American taxpayer — are not getting your money back, then we will change how this program is being managed. If need be, we will send new legislation to Congress to make sure that taxpayers are protected in line with the principles that I have put forward. You should expect nothing less from Washington." Feeding the Hungry
"What I've said is my top priority is making sure people are able to get enough to eat.
